A method of electrochemical corrosion protection for metallic materials. When a metal is electrolyzed in an aqueous solution using the metal as the anode (anodic polarization), it actively dissolves as metal ions. In this potential region, the rate of metal dissolution increases as the applied voltage increases. Some metals become passivated when the voltage is increased further. Anodic protection is a method of corrosion protection in which the metal to be protected is polarized to its passivation potential using an external power source. Therefore, this method can only be used for metals that passivate, and if the applied voltage is insufficient, it may actually accelerate corrosion, so it is important to always maintain the potential of the metal to be protected at its passive potential.
