Located on the border between Germany and France, this German coalfield is connected to the Lorraine coalfield in France. It covers an area of approximately 350 square kilometers. The coal-bearing layers, which contain numerous coal seams 0.6 to 2.5 meters thick, indicate inland deposition and belong to the Upper Carboniferous and Lower Permian periods. The coal is general bituminous coal, with coal reserves of approximately 2 billion tons and annual coal production of 7.52 million tons (1998). The current mining depth is 600 to 1,200 meters. After World War II, it was temporarily integrated into France, but later became part of Germany.
