Japanese: チロリ（英語表記）Glycera chirori

A member of the Polychaeta class of the phylum Annelida, order Polychaetes, family Pyrrhocoridae. It is also called the Velodas because it sticks out its long snout when feeding. Body length is about 10 cm. Number of segments: 170-200. The body is cylindrical, but tapers at both the front and back ends. The head is cone-shaped with four short tentacles at the tip. It extends and retracts thread-like gills from the center of the front of the foot of each segment. It has no blood vessels inside its body, and the body cavity is filled with fluid containing blood cells, giving the entire body a crimson color. It is used as bait for fishing for black porgy, wrasse, and sea bream. It lives in the sand and mud of the intertidal zone and is active. It is found on the coasts of Japan.

環形動物門多毛綱サシバゴカイ目チロリ科。餌をとるときに吻を長く出すのでベロダシとも呼ばれる。体長 10cm内外。環節数 170～200。体は円筒状であるが，前後両端部は細くなる。頭部は円錐形で，先端に4本の短い感触手がある。各環節にある疣足 (いぼあし) の前面中央から糸状の鰓を出したり引込めたりする。体内に血管がなく，体腔内は血球を含んだ体液で満たされているため，体全体が紅色を呈する。チヌ，ベラ，タイなどの釣餌に用いられる。潮間帯の砂泥中にすみ，活発に運動する。日本各地の海岸に分布する。
