Huang Yi (English name)

1744‐1802 A literati painter from the mid-Qing Dynasty in China. His given name was Yi, and his literary name was Da Yi, and he took the name Komatsu after his father Huang Shugu's pen name Matsushi. He was born in Renhe, Zhejiang Province, and served as a canal tsar in Jining, Shandong. Despite the busyness of his official duties, he never abandoned elegance for a single day, devoting himself to poetry and painting. He studied Ni Zan and Huang Gongwang in painting, and opened up new horizons with his plain, simple style. He was close to Xi Gang, and the two shared many common styles. He was knowledgeable about the study of metal and stone, and worked to preserve the Shandong Wu family ancestral hall.
