Severnaya Zemlya (Islands) (English spelling)
An archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of the Taymyr Peninsula in the northern part of the Russian Federation. The name means "northern land". It consists of four large islands, Komsomolets Island, Pioneer Island, Oktyabrskaya Rebolyutsia (October Revolution) Island, and Bolshevik Island, and about ten smaller islands, forming an archipelago. The total area is 37,000 km2. The Kara Sea is to the west of the Taymyr Peninsula and the islands, and the Laptev Sea to the east. Between Bolshevik Island at the southern end and Cape Chelyuskin on the Taymyr Peninsula at the northern end of the continent, the Birkitsky Strait is about 60 km wide.
