Tsukubane - Tsukubane

A deciduous shrub of the Santalaceae family (APG classification: Santalaceae). It is semi-parasitic, deriving some of its nutrients from the roots of other trees underground. It grows to about 2 meters tall and branches well. The leaves are opposite, oblong to ovate, about 8 cm long, entire, with sharp tips and no petioles. Dioecious. Female flowers are solitary at the ends of the branches, while male flowers are in corymbs at the ends of the branches. Both female and male flowers have small, yellow-green petals and four sepals. The female flower is inferior to the ovary and has four bracts attached to it. Male flowers have four short stamens. The fruit is elliptic-ovate to ovate, 6-10 cm long, with four bracts remaining at the apex, forming a linear-lanceolate appendage. This resembles the shuttlecock used in the game of hagoita, hence the name, and it is also known as hago no ki. The fruit is also pickled and used as a garnish for dishes. It grows in the forests of the mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.

ビャクダン科（APG分類：ビャクダン科）の落葉低木。半寄生で、地中で他の樹木の根から養分の一部を補給する。高さ約2メートルで、よく分枝する。葉は対生し、長卵形から卵形、長さ約8センチメートル、全縁で先は鋭くとがり、葉柄はない。雌雄異株。雌花は枝先に単生し、雄花は散房花序をなし、枝先につく。雌・雄花とも花弁は小さく、黄緑色、萼片(がくへん)は4枚。雌花は子房下位で、子房に合着する4枚の包葉がある。雄花は4本の短い雄しべがある。果実は楕円(だえん)状卵形から卵形、長さ6～10センチメートル、頂端に4枚の包葉が残って線状披針(ひしん)形の付属体となる。これが羽子板遊びの羽根に似ており、名の由来となっており、別名ハゴノキともいう。果実はまた塩漬けにし、料理の飾りにもする。本州、四国、九州の山地の林内に生える。
