A state in central Austria. It has an area of 7,154 km2 and a population of 508,000 (1995). 88% of the inhabitants are Catholic. The state capital is Salzburg. It borders Tyrol to the southwest, Carinthia to the south, Steiermark to the east, Upper Austria to the northeast, and the German states of Bavaria to the northwest. It is a typical mountainous country, with only 0.25% of its total area below 400m above sea level, and just under 18% between 400m and 800m above sea level. To the south, beyond the longitudinal valley of the upper Salzach River, rises the northern ridge of the Eastern Alps, the Hohe Tauern, which forms a glacial belt, and a series of mountains over 3,000m high, with the Wiesbachhorn (3,564m) being the highest peak.
