Sarutahiko no Okami - The Wolf of Sarutahiko

Japanese: 猨田彦大神 - さるたひこのおおかみ

The name of a god who appears in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki myths. When Ninigi-no-Mikoto was about to descend from heaven to rule Ashihara no Nakatsukuni (the myth of the descent of the heavenly grandson), a strange-looking god ambushed the group at the crossroads of heaven. One theory is that he had an unusually long nose, a tall back, and glowing red eyes (Nihon Shoki). When Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, who had shamanic powers, questioned him, it became clear that his name was Sarutahiko, and that he had come to guide the heavenly grandson. After the descent of the heavenly grandson, Sarutahiko was sent by Ame-no-Uzume back to Ise.

記紀神話に登場する神の名。瓊瓊杵（ににぎ）命が葦原中国（あしはらのなかつくに）の統治者として天降（あまくだ）ろうとしたとき(天孫降臨神話)，天の八衢（やちまた）で一行を待ち伏せる異形の神がいた。一説には異様に長い鼻，丈高き背，赤く輝く目をもつ(《日本書紀》)という。シャーマン的能力をもつ天鈿女（あめのうずめ）命が問いただすと，名はサルタヒコで天孫を案内するため参上したことがあきらかになった。天孫降臨の後アメノウズメに送られてサルタヒコは伊勢に帰る。
