1003‐70 A poet born in the period of warring factions after the decline and fall of the Umayyad dynasty of Andalusia, he lived a turbulent political life. He supported the powerful Ibn Jahwar and became vizier, but was imprisoned after being accused of slander. He experienced many ups and downs, however, he gained fame for his poems about his unrequited love with Wallada, the daughter of the Umayyad caliph and also a poet. His elegant traditional poetic style marked his epoch, but in the East he is more highly regarded for his highly original epistolary literature than for his poetry.
