A poet born in the period of warring factions after the decline and fall of the Umayyad dynasty of Andalusia, he lived a turbulent political life. He supported the powerful Ibn Jahwar and became vizier, but was imprisoned after being accused of slander. He experienced many ups and downs, however, he gained fame for his poems about his unrequited love with Wallada, the daughter of the Umayyad caliph and also a poet. His elegant traditional poetic style marked his epoch, but in the East he is more highly regarded for his highly original epistolary literature than for his poetry.

アンダルスの後ウマイヤ朝衰亡ののちの群雄割拠の時代に生まれ，波乱万丈の政治生活を送った詩人。権力者イブン･ジャフワルを助けて宰相となるが，讒言（ざんげん）にあって投獄されるなど，なん度も浮沈を経験している。しかしウマイヤ朝カリフの娘で，詩人でもあったワッラーダとの結ばれぬ恋をうたった詩で名声をはせた。格調高い伝統的な詩法は一代を画しているが，東方では詩作品よりも独創性の強い書簡文学で高く評価されている。
