Sarangi

Japanese: サーランギー
Sarangi
A bowed string instrument of the lute family from the Indian subcontinent. The most well-known is the sarangi, used for vocal accompaniment and solo performance in Hindustani music. It is about 60 cm long and carved out of a single piece of wood, with a stocky, nearly rectangular shape. It usually has three gut strings, but under each of these are dozens of metal sympathetic strings to create a long reverberation effect. It is played by sitting cross-legged, holding it vertically, and pushing the strings sideways with the fingernails to get the right pitch. As a folk instrument, the sarangi is also called chikara, chikari, or saranga, and is found in northern India, Nepal, Pakistan, and other areas.
