A dwarf evergreen shrub (illustration) of the Ericaceae family that grows on rocky areas in high mountains. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the creeping stems and leaves resemble centipedes. The stems are divided into many branches and creep along the ground. The leaves are broadly linear, 2-3 mm long, 0.5-0.8 mm wide, with a raised center on the underside and slightly triangular in cross section. In July and August, a single broad, bell-shaped flower grows at the end of the stem. The calyx is reddish brown, the corolla is white and 5 mm long, and there are 10 stamens. The anthers have two hair-like projections on the dorsal surface, and the anther locules have openings at the end. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
