When a photographic plate is placed on a metal plate, a small electrode is placed on the emulsion layer, and a voltage is applied between the plate and the plate to cause a discharge. When the photograph is developed, a beautiful radial pattern appears with the small electrode at the center. This is called a Lichtenberg figure, and when the small electrode is at a positive potential relative to the metal plate, the pattern becomes dendritic, and when it is at a negative potential, the pattern becomes circular. Originally, GC Lichtenberg scattered light powder on an insulating plate to which an electric field was applied, causing a discharge, and obtained this figure from the distribution of the powder. It is still used today in research on discharges.

写真乾板を金属板にのせ，乳剤層の上に小電極をおいて金属板との間に電圧をかけ放電を起こさせ，写真を現像すると，小電極を中心とした美しい放射状の模様が現れる。これをリヒテンベルク図形といい，小電極が金属板に対し正電位のときは樹枝状，負電位のときは円形の模様になる。もとG.C.リヒテンベルクが電場をかけた絶縁体の板の上に軽い粉をまいて放電させ，粉の分布からこの図形を得たもの。今日でも放電研究に用いられている。
