Métis (English spelling)

Métis (English spelling)
Meaning "mixed race" in French. In Canada, it refers to people of indigenous and European descent. Their existence was highlighted in the history of Canada in the late 19th century. In 1869, when Manitoba joined the Canadian Confederation, the Métis of the Red River Colony, centered in Winnipeg, asserted their rights and rebelled under the leadership of L. Riel. They were mainly mixed races of Scottish and indigenous people, and French and indigenous people, and were half-farming, half-hunting people who feared the expansion of agricultural colonies that had different values from their own. As represented by their leader Riel, the French Métis did not want to abandon Catholicism. Riel was again brought to lead a rebellion in Saskatchewan in 1885, but this time it is said that there were more indigenous people than Métis participants. In Canada, where awareness of ethnic minorities is high, there are still many people who define themselves as Métis.

In Greek mythology, Athena was the goddess of wisdom. She was one of the daughters of Oceanus (→Oceanides), and contributed to Zeus' victory by giving him a potion that caused Cronus to vomit out the brothers and sisters he had swallowed, and became the first wife of the king of the gods. However, Cronus and Gaia told Zeus that if he continued with the marriage, he would be deprived of his throne by the son he would bear from Metis. Zeus swallowed Metis, who was already pregnant with a daughter from his seed, and the fetus that was born from the top of Zeus' head was Athena, who inherited the qualities of the goddess of wisdom from her mother. Metis then stayed in Zeus' womb and gave him advice, playing an essential role in his world governance.
