Meaning "mixed race" in French. In Canada, it refers to people of indigenous and European descent. Their existence was highlighted in the history of Canada in the late 19th century. In 1869, when Manitoba joined the Canadian Confederation, the Métis of the Red River Colony, centered in Winnipeg, asserted their rights and rebelled under the leadership of L. Riel. They were mainly mixed races of Scottish and indigenous people, and French and indigenous people, and were half-farming, half-hunting people who feared the expansion of agricultural colonies that had different values from their own. As represented by their leader Riel, the French Métis did not want to abandon Catholicism. Riel was again brought to lead a rebellion in Saskatchewan in 1885, but this time it is said that there were more indigenous people than Métis participants. In Canada, where awareness of ethnic minorities is high, there are still many people who define themselves as Métis. Metis |
