A French soldier and army general. He served overseas for many years before World War II, and after the war he served as commander in chief of the Indochina Expeditionary Force and the Algerian Expeditionary Force. He participated in the May 1958 revolt by French colonists in Algiers, who called for a "French Algeria," and played a part in supporting de Gaulle. After his reappearance, de Gaulle leaned toward accepting Algerian independence, so he participated in a military revolt in April 1961, and after the revolt failed, he was sentenced to death in absentia. He founded the terrorist organization OAS and continued to oppose de Gaulle's Algerian policies, but was arrested in 1962 and had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment. He was released under a special amnesty in 1968. [Tetsuya Hirase] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
