Born: April 20, 1745 in Saint-André Died October 25, 1826. A French psychiatrist from Paris. One of the founders of modern psychiatry. A pioneer of humane treatment of the mentally ill. In 1792, he became chief physician at the Bicêtre psychiatric hospital, where he freed the patients who had been held there for many years from their chains, the first of many bold reforms he implemented. He also classified various diseases and wrote Nosographie philosophique (1798), a pioneering work in modern disease classification.
