A walking shrimp of the family Oplegnathidae in the class Crustacea, it can reach a body length of 35 cm, but is generally 20 to 30 cm (illustration). It is widely distributed from the Boso Peninsula to the western Indian Ocean, living at depths of about 30 m. It is caught along with the fan shrimp in the waters off Japan, but the population is small, and even large species have little value in the fishing industry. It has a good taste and is edible in some areas. The carapace is extremely hard and covered with countless granular projections and coarse hairs. The cephalothorax is elongated and rectangular.
