Japanese: 更紙 - ざらがみ

A colloquial name for low-grade printing paper, it is classified as printing paper D. It is made primarily from mechanical pulp with a small amount of chemical pulp added. It is used for temporary printed materials such as advertising flyers. There is also no clear distinction between this and printing paper, which is made primarily from recycled paper. Josara paper corresponds to printing paper C, and contains a high percentage of chemical pulp. It is mainly used for the main text of magazines, office paper, and study paper, but as the use of recycled paper has increased, it has become difficult to classify paper based on raw material composition alone. 下級印刷用紙の俗称で，印刷用紙Dに分類される。機械パルプを主原料とし，多少の化学パルプを加えて作る。広告ちらしなどの一時的印刷物に用いる。古紙を主体にした印刷泉貨紙との区別もはっきりしない。上（じよう）更紙は印刷用紙Cに相当するもので，化学パルプの混入率が高くなり，おもに雑誌の本文，事務用紙，学習用紙に使用されるが，古紙利用が進むにつれ原料組成だけでの紙の等級分けは困難になった。【臼田誠人】
