Paré - Paré (English spelling) Ambroise Paré

French surgeon. Medical historian Fielding H. Garrison (1870-1935) called Hunter, Lister and Paré the three greatest surgeons of all time. Born in Laval, he apprenticed to a barber surgeon and worked at the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Paris at the age of 19. He served in the Italian field from 1536 to 1545, where he gained experience in treating war wounds. His book Treatise on the Treatment of Bullet Wounds (1545), which describes his experiences, is considered a masterpiece. However, since he did not receive a formal education, he wrote it in French instead of Latin. He improved amputation of limbs, especially in order to stop bleeding, by adopting vascular ligation instead of the cauterization method that had been commonly used until then, and achieved good results. Because of his high reputation as a surgeon, he was given special admission to the Collège de Saint-Cômes, an organization of educated surgeons, and served as personal physician to Henry II, Francis II and Charles IX. His words, "I bandaged him, and God healed him," are often quoted.
