Armand Salacrou

Armand Salacrou

French playwright. Born in Rouen on August 8th as the son of a pharmacist. He studied medicine, philosophy and law in Paris, was influenced by surrealism and communism, and started writing plays while working as a journalist. His first play was the avant-garde "Pachouli" which was picked up by Charles Durand in 1930. Before the Second World War, he made a name for himself by presenting unique anti-realistic dramas of the human condition to the world using a variety of themes and techniques, including "Atlas Hotel" (1931), "A Free Woman" (1934), "A Stranger in Arras" (1935), a masterpiece also performed by Durand to good acclaim, "The Earth is Round" (1938), which features Savonarola, a monk who was a reformer and fanatical dictator in Renaissance Italy, and the comedy "A Laugh" (1939). Thus, starting with works inspired by the Resistance, such as La Nuit des Anglais (1946) and Les Islands de Renoir (1947), he produced works with a more mature style after the war, such as God Knows (1950) and Boulevard Durand (1960), which generally had strong social aspects, and he demonstrated his vitality by fusing these with a sense of existential loneliness, but it cannot be denied that he has drifted away from the front lines since the 1960s. He is one of the leading figures in the contemporary French theater world, and has been a member of the Académie Goncourt since 1949.
