Tateiwa ruins - Tateiwa ruins

A collective term for a group of ruins from the early to middle Yayoi period located in the hills of Tateiwa, Iizuka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It has long been famous for the existence of the Municipal Ground Ruins, known for the discovery of grave goods such as human bones wearing shell rings and iron swords from a jar burial tomb excavated in 1933 (Showa 8), and the Shimokata Ruins, which are known for the concentrated production of stone knives made from diabase tuff distributed throughout the northern half of Kyushu. In particular, the Hotta Ruins, where numerous jar burial tombs were discovered and investigated during soil mining work in 1963 and 1965 (Showa 38 and 40), occupy the center of the Tateiwa Ruins. Here, 24 burial holes (storage holes) belonging to the first half of the middle period and 39 jar burial tombs mainly from the second half of the middle period were investigated, and many grave goods were excavated, including mirrors from the early Han Dynasty, thin bronze spears, iron swords, iron spears, iron halberds, and glass tubular beads. In particular, six early Han mirrors, one thin bronze spear, one iron sword, and one iron halberd were buried in the No. 10 jar burial tomb. The significance of the Tateiwa site is great, as it reveals the status of the buried in Yayoi society, known from the Hotta site, and the social division of labor seen in the production of stone knives at the Shimokata site.
