Born in 1910 in Zhejiang, Jiaxing [Died] June 19, 1985. Beijing Chinese archaeologist. After graduating from Tsinghua University, he studied at the University of London, where he learned archaeological methodology in Europe. In 1955, he became a member of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (now the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences). He then served as deputy director of the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, before becoming its director in 1966. He is one of the highest authorities in Chinese archaeology, and although his field of expertise is the Chinese Neolithic period, he has also written many papers on the Han and Tang dynasties, covering almost all fields. He also contributed to cultural exchange between Japan and China through archaeology, visiting Japan in 1963 and 1979.
