[Died] March 17, 2005. Princeton, New Jersey. American diplomat and diplomatic historian. Graduated from Princeton University in 1925. Studied Russian language and history at the University of Berlin from 1929 to 1931. Served as counselor at the Moscow Embassy from 1945 to 1946, chairman of the State Department's Policy Planning Committee from 1947 to 1949, adviser to the State Department from 1949 to 1950, ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1952 to 1953, and ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1961 to 1963. In the July 1947 issue of Foreign Affairs magazine, under the signature "X", he presented a policy to prevent the Soviet Union's expansionist tendencies in an article titled "The Sources of Soviet Conduct". This paper made Kennan's name known worldwide, and the containment policy against the Soviet Union became the fundamental principle of American diplomacy and the basic principle of the foreign policy of the entire Western countries during the Cold War (→Containment). From 1950 onwards (except for his term as ambassador), he was engaged in research into the history of US-Soviet relations at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, where he became a professor emeritus in 1974. During this time he taught at the University of Chicago in 1951, at Oxford University from 1957-58, and at Harvard University from 1960 and 1966-70. His works include American Diplomacy, 1900-1950 (1951) and Russia and the West under Lenin and Stalin (1960).
