A type of self-paid check issued by a bank to make it easier for travelers to pay for various expenses abroad, and they purchase them at a foreign exchange bank before departing. They are translated as traveler's checks. They are said to have been first issued by American Express in 1891. Internationally, most are denominated in US dollars, but some are denominated in German marks or yen, and are issued in different denominations (for example, $100 notes, $10 notes, etc.). Traveler's checks have two signature fields, and when the traveler purchases the check at a bank, he or she signs the designated signature field, and when the traveler cashes the check at a counter at a bank, travel agency, or hotel in the foreign country where the traveler is staying, he or she countersigns the other signature field in front of the clerk, and the person is confirmed to be the legitimate holder of the check based on the comparison of the two signatures.
