A school of Islamic law that spread throughout Iraq, Persia, and the Khorasan region. In Iraq it was also called the Dawudite school, named after its founder, Dawud ibn Ali ibn Khalaf (815/8-884). Unlike the four major Sunni schools of law, it did not recognize the consensus of scholars (ijma) or analogy (qiyas), arguing that legal provisions should be based solely on the clear (zahir) meaning of the original texts of the Quran and traditions (hadith).
