A large river in Western Asia. It is 1,900 km long. It originates in the Kurdistan Mountains in southeastern Turkey and flows southeast into Iraq. In Iraq, it joins the Great Zab, the Little Zab, and the Diyala River, and flows through the Mesopotamian plain, the birthplace of the world's oldest civilization. It joins the Euphrates at Qurna, north of Basra, to become the Shatt al-Arab and flow into the Persian Gulf. In recent years, flood control and the conversion of downstream wetlands into farmland have been underway through the construction of dams and irrigation canals.
