Bimetal thermometer

A thermometer that takes advantage of the property of a bimetal to bend toward a metal with a smaller coefficient of expansion when heated. The bimetal used is often a combination of brass and invar (nickel steel with 36% nickel), and the thermometer's scale range is usually between -20 and 150°C, but there are also ones for high temperatures. Examples include meteorological thermometers in which one end of a plate-shaped bimetal is fixed and the movement of the other end is magnified and recorded with a lever, and industrial thermometers in which a spiral or helical bimetal is housed in a protective tube. They are also used for automatic temperature control in household electrical appliances.

バイメタルが熱せられたとき，膨張係数の小さい金属の側へ湾曲する性質を利用した温度計。使用するバイメタルは，黄銅とアンバー (ニッケル 36%のニッケル鋼) の組合せが多く，普通，温度計の目盛り範囲は－20～150℃以内であるが，高温用のものもある。板状バイメタルの一端を固定し，他端の動きをてこで拡大して記録させる気象用自記温度計や，保護管に渦巻形，弦巻形のバイメタルを収めた工業用温度計などがある。また，家庭用電気器具などで自動温度調節に用いられている。
