〘Noun〙① The first (rat) and last (pig) of the zodiac. ② The name of an old time. Under the fixed time system of the Nara and Heian periods, it was between approximately 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM the following day, which is the current time. Under the variable time system of the Kamakura period and later, it was between approximately 6:00 PM and 9:30 PM, which is the current time. ※Genji (around 1001-14), Ukifune: "When it's time to sleep, the chopsticks come out." ③ The name of a direction. Between the signs of boar (I) and rat (Ne) , a little west of due north. ※Haiku, Inukoshu (1633), 1: "Since I was the one with the highest stature of boar and rat, the way to pull the rice sacks is between the signs of ine (fixed)."
