Manzo Nomura

Japanese: 野村万蔵 - のむらまんぞう
Manzo Nomura

Noh actor. Kyogen performer of the Izumi school. The sixth generation of the Nomura Manzo family, who were town kyogen performers in the Maeda clan of Kaga (Ishikawa Prefecture) during the Edo period. Born in Tokyo as the eldest son of the fifth generation Manzo (retired name Mansai), who moved to Tokyo in the early Meiji period. Previously known as Mansaku and Manzo. With his disciplined and meticulous style of performance, he achieved the modernization of Kyogen, and in his later years he added a light and elegant style. He contributed to the spread of Kyogen not only in Japan but also in Europe and the United States. In 1967 (Showa 42), he was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). In 1969, he received the Art Academy Prize. In 1974, he became the first Kyogen performer to be elected a member of the Japan Art Academy. He studied under Shimomura Kiyotoki from a young age, and made a name for himself as a Noh mask maker. His books include "The Way of Kyogen," "Kyogen Masks," "Skills in Summer, Voices in Winter," and "Tales of Kyogen Art." His eldest son, the 7th Manzo (Nomura Man), his second son, the 2nd Mansaku, and his fifth son, Mannosuke, carried on the family tradition, and in 1997, the 7th Manzo was individually designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). Miyake Tokuro, the 9th, was his younger brother. The name Manzo was set to be passed down to the 8th generation by Nomura Mannojo, the 5th son of the 7th Manzo, but Mannojo passed away in 2004, and his second son, the 2nd Nomura Yojuro, took on the name 9th Manzo in 2005, and Mannosuke was posthumously awarded the 8th title.
