Savannakhet - Savannakhet (English spelling)

Japanese: サバナケット - さばなけっと（英語表記）Savannakhet

The capital of Savannakhet Province in central Laos. It is located 290 km southeast of the capital Vientiane, on the left bank of the Mekong River, with the opposite bank being Thai territory. It has a population of 58,200 (estimated 2003). It is connected by road from Quang Tri in central Vietnam. During the civil war, it was one of the bases of right-wing forces, so the roads were paved and new buildings were constructed, making it one of the leading cities in Laos. Limestone is produced in large quantities in the vicinity. There is the grave of Bière, a French soldier who contributed greatly to the development of Laos.

ラオス中部、サバナケット州の州都。首都ビエンチャンの南東290キロメートル、メコン川左岸に位置し、対岸はタイ領である。人口5万8200（2003推計）。ベトナム中部のクアンチから道路が通じる。内戦時代は右派勢力の拠点の一つであったため、道路が舗装され新しい建物が建てられ、ラオス有数の都市となった。付近では石灰石を多量に産出する。ラオスの開発に尽くしたフランスの軍人ビエールの墓がある。
