Tsuneoki Ikeda

Japanese:
Tsuneoki Ikeda

A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. According to the "Abridged History of the Ikeda Family" (published by the Okayama Prefectural Local Culture Foundation), "Lord Nobuteru was originally Tsuneoki, his childhood name was Shosaburo, he shaved his head and became Lord Shonyu, and his posthumous title was Gokokuin." Regarding "Nobuteru," the "Ikeda Akimasa (12th Lord of Okayama Domain) Family Genealogy" (Ikeda Family Library) states, "He distinguished himself in the Battle of Okehazama, was given the surname by Nobunaga, changed his name to Nobuteru, and became a warrior general," but his name is not found in any old documents or high-quality materials from that time. While his father, Ikeda Tsunetoshi, was a ronin, his mother, Yotokuin, became Nobunaga's wet nurse, and he served Nobunaga. It is said that Nobunaga was able to become a wet nurse because he only bit Yotokuin's breast and did not tear it. He distinguished himself in the Battle of Okehazama in 1560 (Eiroku 3), and was awarded Inuyama Castle in Owari Province in 1570 (Genki 1). In 1579 (Tensho 7), he defeated Araki Murashige in Settsu, and was awarded the castles of Arima, Amagasaki, and Hanakuma. After the Honnoji Incident in 1582, he defeated Akechi Mitsuhide together with Hashiba Hideyoshi, and became a senior retainer, administering Kyoto. He was awarded 100,000 koku in Settsu Province and resided in Osaka Castle. In the Battle of Shizugatake the following year, he joined Hideyoshi and defeated Shibata Katsuie, and was awarded 130,000 koku in Mino Province. In 1584, Oda Nobukatsu and Tokugawa Ieyasu set up camp at Komakiyama, and came into conflict with Hideyoshi. Tsuneoki, who sided with Hideyoshi, proposed a strategy to capture Okazaki and attack Ieyasu from both sides, and was employed. He advanced with Toyotomi Hidetsugu as commander-in-chief, but Hidetsugu's forces were destroyed in a surprise attack by Ieyasu's troops, and Tsuneoki was killed in battle at Nagakute along with the forces of his eldest son, Motosuke, and his son-in-law, Mori Nagayoshi.
