French organic chemist. He studied at the École Normale and became a professor at the University of Toulouse in 1884. In 1897, together with Jean Baptiste Senderens (1856-1937), he succeeded in hydrogenating ethylene using nickel as a catalyst. He subsequently researched catalytic reduction methods for unsaturated organic compounds using various reducing metals, pioneering a new field in organic chemistry and building the foundations of today's oleochemical industry. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1912. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
