French organic chemist. He studied at the École Normale and became a professor at the University of Toulouse in 1884. In 1897, together with Jean Baptiste Senderens (1856-1937), he succeeded in hydrogenating ethylene using nickel as a catalyst. He subsequently researched catalytic reduction methods for unsaturated organic compounds using various reducing metals, pioneering a new field in organic chemistry and building the foundations of today's oleochemical industry. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1912.

フランスの有機化学者。エコール・ノルマルに学び，1884年トゥールーズ大学教授。1897年サンドランJean Baptiste Senderens〔1856-1937〕とともに，ニッケルを触媒としてのエチレンの水素添加に成功。以後，種々の還元金属を用いての不飽和有機化合物の接触還元法を研究し，有機化学に新分野を開拓，今日の油脂化学工業の基礎を築いた。1912年ノーベル化学賞。
