A mammal of the bovidae family in the order Artiodactyla. A medium-sized antelope that lives in the swamps of southern Africa, from Namibia to Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia. Its body shape is similar to that of a waterbuck, but it is smaller and has a light chestnut color. Its limbs have prominent black spots. Its underside is white. Only males have beautiful, slender horns that curve gently into an S shape. Its body length is 130-180 cm, shoulder height 85-105 cm, tail length 30-40 cm, and weight 60-120 kg. It lives in large herds near water sources, and goes into water up to a depth of about 60 cm to feed on aquatic plants and wetland plants. When chased by an enemy, it does not head for land, but instead goes into the water, showing a strong aquatic tendency for an antelope.
