A village in Kunohe County in northeastern Iwate Prefecture. Population 5,204 (1995). Facing the Pacific Ocean to the east, it borders Kuji City to the north and west. It is made up of mountainous areas that connect to the Kitakami Highlands, and the coastal area forms low terraces. The Atsuka River flows northeast into the Pacific Ocean, and a small amount of lowland opens up along the river. The fishing industry is thriving, with wakame seaweed and scallop farming, and the prefecture is the largest producer of young scallops in particular. Agriculture is poor due to sea fog, but pig farming, edible chrysanthemums, and soybeans are cultivated. The Noda Tamagawa Mine, which produced manganese ore, was once located here, but it closed in 1984. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
