In India, a social custom is when a widow commits suicide by burning her husband's funeral pyre. It was practiced among the ruling class from ancient times, but later it was also practiced by the general public. There are monuments in various parts of India that commemorate widows who have committed suicide, and there is also a folk belief that the souls of widows who have committed suicide are worshiped as gods. Ram Mohan Roy, who founded the Brahma Samaj, persuaded the British Viceroy to ban the custom of sati, and the custom eventually disappeared in the 19th century. However, in recent years, there have been cases that could be considered a modern version of sati, such as husbands burning their wives to death for dowry and engaging in multiple marriages.
