A title given to the rulers of the Muhammad Ali dynasty of Egypt, who achieved de facto independence under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. It is also translated as viceroy. In Turkish, it is called hediv. It means "ruler" in Persian and was used as a title for monarchs in some Islamic dynasties since ancient times. The Ottoman Empire had recognized the hereditary succession of the wali (governor) position in Egypt to Muhammad Ali's family since 1841, but in 1867 Sultan Abdul Aziz gave the title of hediv to Muhammad Ali's grandson, Ismail Pasha.
