A city in the southern part of Saitama Prefecture, occupying part of the Musashino Plateau. It was incorporated as a city in 1966. The city has developed in Ogimachiya and Bushi, and is served by the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, Hachiko Line, and National Route 16. In March 1996, the Metropolitan Intercity Expressway was opened, and the city is now in the commuting area to Tokyo, so residential development is remarkable. In addition to local industries such as lace and other textiles, cement tiles, and brewing, there are many small factories producing a variety of electrical equipment. It is a specialty of Sayama tea, and is the largest tea producer in the prefecture in both production volume and cultivation area. After World War II, the site of the former Army Air Academy became the US military's Johnson Base, and was later returned to Japan, becoming the Air Self-Defense Force's Iruma Base and a park. 埼玉県南部,武蔵野台地の一部を占める市。1966年市制。扇町屋,仏子(ぶし)などに市街が発達,西武池袋線,八高線,国道16号線が通じ,1996年3月首都圏中央連絡自動車道が開通,東京への通勤圏に含まれ宅地化が著しい。レースなどの紡織,セメント瓦,醸造などの地場産業のほか,電気機器など多様な小規模工場が多い。狭山茶の特産地で,生産量,栽培面積とも県内一である。第2次大戦後,旧陸軍航空士官学校跡地は米軍のジョンソン基地となった後返還され,航空自衛隊入間基地,公園などとなった。北部の高倉に高倉寺観音堂がある。44.69km2。14万9872人(2010)。
