Gai-xia; Kai-hsia

Japanese: 垓下 - がいか（英語表記）Gai-xia; Kai-hsia

An ancient battlefield in Anhui Province, China. After the fall of the Qin Dynasty, Emperor Liu Bang (→ Gaozu) of the Han Dynasty rebelled against Xiang Yu, who called himself the overlord of Western Chu, and the Chu-Han War broke out. Xiang Yu, who had initially held the upper hand, was gradually pressured by Liu Bang, and in 202 B.C., he was finally surrounded here. Hearing the cries of being surrounded by enemies, he thought that the Han had conquered his hometown of Chu, so he said goodbye to his beloved concubine, Yu Jiang, and challenged him to a final battle, but was defeated. This is known as the Battle of Gaixia.

中国の安徽省にある古戦場。秦の滅亡後，西楚の覇王と称した項羽に対して漢の劉邦 (→高祖) が反抗し，楚漢の争いが起った。最初優勢であった項羽も次第に劉邦に圧迫され，前 202年，ついにこの地で囲まれた。四面楚歌の声を聞いて，漢が故郷の楚を征服してしまったと思い，愛姫虞美人 (ぐびじん) に別れを告げて，最後の決戦を挑んだが大敗した。これを垓下の戦いという。
