Encyclopedia by the Roman scholar Pliny. 37 volumes. Dedicated to the future emperor Titus in 77. Volume 1 consists of an index and tables of Greek and Latin documents used as sources. Volume 2 deals with space science, volumes 3-6 with geography and ethnology, volume 7 with anthropology and human physiology, volumes 8-11 with zoology, volumes 12-19 with botany, volumes 20-27 with the medical uses of plants, volumes 28-32 with medicines derived from animals, and volumes 33-37 with mineralogy and metallurgy, including mineral paints and gemstones. A treasure trove of information on the science, art, and civilization of the time in general.

This book by the French naturalist Georges Louis de Buffon has the characteristics of an encyclopedia. The author, who was the superintendent of the royal gardens, planned it with the help of scholars and writers. During his lifetime, 36 volumes were published between 1749 and 1789, and after his death, 8 volumes were added by his successors, making it a large work of 44 volumes in total.
