Year of death: 1923 Year of birth: Tempo 14 (1843) An ivory carver from the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Edo, he initially became a monk but later returned to secular life to pursue ivory carving. He studied the human skeleton under doctors Matsumoto Ryojun and Taguchi Kazumi, and is known for his intricately carved skulls. In 1881, he formed a sculpture competition (later the Tokyo Carvers' Association) with Ishikawa Mitsuaki and Shimamura Shunmyo, and built the foundations for modern ivory carving. His representative works include "Imperial Skull" (Tokyo National Museum collection), which was exhibited at the 2nd Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1881, and "Court Lady" (Imperial Household Agency collection), which was exhibited at the Japan Art Association exhibition in 1901.
