Born: September 21, 1758 in Paris
Died: February 21, 1838. A French orientalist in Paris. When the School of Oriental Languages opened in Paris in 1795, he taught Arabic, and subsequently served as a professor of Persian at the Collège de France, president of the University of Paris, and director of the School of Oriental Languages. He was also involved in politics, and belonged to the Restorationists. His main work, Grammaire arabe (2 volumes, 1810), had a great influence on later generations. His other works include Chrestomathie arabe (3 volumes, 1806).

フランスの東洋学者。 1795年のパリ東洋語学校開設に際しアラビア語の講座を担当，次いでコレージュ・ド・フランスのペルシア語教授，パリ大学学長，東洋語学校校長を歴任。政治にも関係し，王政復古派に属した。主著『アラビア語文法』 Grammaire arabe (2巻，1810) は後世に大きな影響を及ぼした。ほかに『アラビア名文集』 Chrestomathie arabe (3巻，1806) などの著作がある。
