Born: September 21, 1758 in Paris Died: February 21, 1838. A French orientalist in Paris. When the School of Oriental Languages opened in Paris in 1795, he taught Arabic, and subsequently served as a professor of Persian at the Collège de France, president of the University of Paris, and director of the School of Oriental Languages. He was also involved in politics, and belonged to the Restorationists. His main work, Grammaire arabe (2 volumes, 1810), had a great influence on later generations.
