Although they were seen before the Edo period, it seems that the Chinese word "frugality" began to be used in Japan from the Middle Ages, and around that time, the "excessive tax system" was used as a frugality law. In the Edo period, the shogunate often issued frugality laws (as did the various feudal domains), which became more severe from the middle of the period when the financial situation worsened, and were issued frequently, especially during the Kyoho, Kansei, and Tenpo reforms.
