Jukebox - Jukebox (English spelling)

A device that stores many records inside and automatically plays the desired record by inserting a coin. The idea for such a mechanism was already in the days of Edison wax cylinder records, and in 1889 Louis Glass of Pacific Phonograph installed an automatic playing device using wax cylinder records in San Francisco. Modern jukeboxes were successfully released in 1927 by Automatic Musical Instruments (AMI), and many other manufacturers followed suit, spreading across the United States. At first, SP records were used, but when 45 rpm single records were released in 1949, records were switched to these. When playing, the record rotates vertically, and many of them have two pickups on both sides that can be selected to play either side. Some jukeboxes have the function of not only selecting one song with one coin, but also reserving multiple records with multiple coins or bills. At first, jukeboxes could store only a few dozen records, but later they could store hundreds or even thousands of records, meeting a wide range of customer demands and becoming popular in hotels, nightclubs, discos, etc. In Japan, they were first introduced by the American occupying forces after World War II, and became popular from the mid-1950s to the 1970s. As new ways of enjoying music, such as karaoke, emerged, customer tastes changed, and jukeboxes that directly played records fell out of fashion. Although traditional jukeboxes have disappeared overseas, jukeboxes that use compact discs (CDs) instead of single records have been commercialized, and digital jukeboxes that allow you to download music over the Internet and keep your music up to date are appearing, and a new jukebox market is taking shape.

内部にたくさんのレコードが収納してあり、硬貨（コイン）を投入することで希望するレコードを自動的に演奏することができる装置。このような仕掛けの発想は、エジソン式蝋管(ろうかん)レコードの時代にすでにあり、1889年パシフィック・フォノグラフ社のルイス・グラスLouis Glassが、蝋管レコードを使った自動演奏装置をサンフランシスコに設置した記録がある。近代的なジュークボックスは、1927年にオートマチック・ミュージカル・インスツルメント社（AMI）が発売して成功し、多くのメーカーがこれに追随して全米に広まった。初めはSPレコードを用いていたが、1949年に45回転シングルレコードが発売されると、レコードはこれに移行した。演奏時、レコードは垂直状態で回転し、レコードの両側に用意された二つのピックアップを選択することにより、どちらの面も演奏できるようになっているものが多い。一つのコインで1曲を指定するだけでなく、複数のコイン、あるいは紙幣で複数のレコードを予約することができる機能をもつものもある。レコード収納数は、初めは数十枚程度であったが、後には数百枚から数千枚に及び、客の要望に広くこたえられるようになり、ホテル、ナイトクラブ、ディスコなどに普及した。日本には第二次世界大戦後、アメリカ駐留軍が持ち込んだものが始まりで、1950年代なかばから1970年代にかけて普及した。カラオケなど新しい音楽の楽しみ方が現れると、客の好みも変わり、直接レコードを演奏する形式のジュークボックスは廃れていった。外国でも従来型のジュークボックスは姿を消したが、シングルレコードにかわってコンパクトディスク（CD）を使うジュークボックスが商品化され、さらにインターネットを使って音楽をダウンロードし、つねに最新の曲に更新することができるデジタル方式のジュークボックスが登場するなど、新しいジュークボックス市場が形成されつつある。
