A Kabuki play. A domestic drama in four acts. Written by Kawatake Mokuami. Commonly known as "Chijimiya Shinsuke" or "The Murder of Miyokichi." It was first performed in July 1860 (Man'en 1) at the Ichimuraza Theater in Edo by Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Shinsuke, Iwai Kumesaburo (Hanshiro 8) as Miyokichi, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro (Ichikawa Danjuro 9) as Hozumi Shinzaburo. It is an adaptation of the incident in 1807 (Bunka 4) when the Eitai Bridge collapsed due to the large crowds at the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival, and the murder of a geisha at a kimono shop in Hongo. On the day of the Fukagawa Hachiman festival, traveling merchant Chijikuya Shinsuke saves Fukagawa geisha Miyokichi from the unrequited love of Akama Genzaemon, who is gambling. That night, he rescues Miyokichi again after she falls into the river after a fall from the Eitai Bridge. Shinsuke, who is in love with Miyokichi, confesses his feelings to her on the boat and goes out of his way to raise the money needed for her lover, Hozumi Shinzaburo. However, Miyokichi is cut off by Shinzaburo, who has given his all to his benefactor's sister. Miyokichi drinks alcohol to drown her sorrows and is disrespectful of Shinsuke in front of a packed audience. In anger and rage, Shinsuke kills many people with the enchanted sword Muramasa and kills Miyokichi on the bank of Susaki. At the end, Shinsuke commits suicide after learning that Miyokichi is his younger sister, whom he was separated from when he was a child, in a tale of cause and effect. Overall, however, it is a masterpiece of the "Kizewamono" genre, depicting realistically the social conditions and human feelings of the downtown area and sharply depicting the process by which an honest country boy, Shinsuke, falls victim to the charms of a beautiful city prostitute and is ruined. Shinsuke was one of the hit roles of the first Nakamura Kichiemon. [Toshiaki Matsui] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
