As mentioned above, the indigenous people were of Southeast Asian descent, and are said to have first migrated to the east coast of the African continent, and then to the island of Madagascar around the 10th century. In the early 17th century, the centralized Kingdom of Andriana (later the Merina Kingdom) was founded in the central highlands. Missionary work by Britain and France began in the early 19th century, and in 1869 Queen Ranavalona II converted to Christianity, making Protestantism the state religion, and Christianity spread throughout the country.
