A general term for birds of the Pteroclidae family (columbiformes), or one of these species (illustration). A total of 16 species are known, distributed throughout Africa, central and southern Asia, and southern Europe. They live mainly in dry grasslands and wilderness, living in flocks on the ground. Total length 23-42 cm. Their bodies are about the size of a pigeon, stocky, but their wings are long and slender, making them powerful flyers. Their beaks are short, have no wax membrane at the base, and are short and conical. Their plumage is brown or sandy overall, with black or gray patterns. ハト目サケイ科Pteroclidaeの鳥の総称,またはそのうちの1種を指す(イラスト)。全部で16種が知られ,アフリカ,アジア中部~南部,南ヨーロッパに分布する。主として乾燥した草原,荒野などに生息し,群れをつくって地上で生活している。全長23~42cm。体はハトぐらいの大きさで,ずんぐりしているが,翼は細長く,飛ぶ力は強い。くちばしは短く,根もとに蠟膜がなく,短い円錐形をしている。羽色は全体に褐色か砂色で,黒色や灰色の模様がある。
