A marine fish of the family Bocconidae in the order Anguilliformes. It has a pointed snout and a mouth that is located below. It is widely distributed from central Honshu southward to the waters of Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, and the temperate and tropical open oceans and offshore areas of the Atlantic Ocean. It has a sardine-shaped body shape. It can reach a body length of 60 cm. The abdomen is silvery white, the dorsal edge is yellowish, and it is covered with round scales. It has a clear lateral line. The dorsal fin is located in the center of the body, and the pelvic fin is located below the rear end of the base of the dorsal fin. The anal fin is small and located halfway between the pelvic fin and the caudal fin. The caudal fin is forked. Like eels, it undergoes a leptocephalous juvenile stage before metamorphosing into an adult fish.

カライワシ目ソトイワシ科の海産魚。吻（ふん）がとがっていて，口は下位。本州中部以南より東南アジア海域，インド洋，大西洋の温帯･熱帯外洋･沖合域に広く分布する。体形はイワシ形。体長60cmに達する。体は腹部は銀白色，背縁部は黄色みを帯び，円鱗で覆われる。明りょうな側線をもつ。背びれは体の中央に位置し，腹びれは背びれ基底部の後端下方にある。しりびれは小さく腹びれと尾びれの中間にある。尾びれは二叉する。ウナギのようにレプトセファラス形の幼期を経て変態し成魚となる。
