Emery - Emery (English spelling)

A relatively fine-grained, homogeneous, hard rock composed mainly of aluminum, formed mainly by the thermal metamorphism of claystone, or the name of an abrasive obtained from it. It contains hard minerals such as corundum, spinel group minerals, and garnet as its main components, and may also contain iron oxide minerals such as magnetite and hematite. When produced in large quantities, it is crushed and used as an abrasive. In Japan, it is produced in small quantities at the Kiura Mine in Ume Town, Oita Prefecture (now Ume, Saiki City). Its external characteristics include a dark gray appearance, a relatively high specific gravity, extremely high hardness, and a lack of coarse grains.

おもに粘土岩の熱変成作用によって生成されたアルミニウムを主成分とする比較的細粒均質で硬い岩石、あるいはこれから得られた研磨剤の名称。主成分としてコランダム（鋼玉）、スピネル（尖(せん)晶石）族鉱物、ざくろ石など硬度の高い鉱物を含み、磁鉄鉱や赤鉄鉱など鉄の酸化鉱物を含むこともある。多量に産すれば粉砕して研磨剤に用いられる。日本では大分県宇目(うめ)町（現、佐伯(さいき)市宇目）木浦(きうら)鉱山で少量産する。外見上の特徴として、暗灰色の外観、比較的大きい比重、きわめて高い硬度、粗粒部の欠如などがあげられる。
