〘noun〙 (translation of square sail) A rectangular sail that is stretched out from a horizontal symmetrical rafter attached to the mast. A typical sail used since ancient times, suitable for sailing against the wind, and the sails of Japanese ships also belong to this style. ⇔Forward-sail. *Ryusei (1924) by Tominosawa Rintaro, 1: "The sound of the man's running shoes shot into her ears like a square sail being tormented by the wind."
