Stored nut moth

Japanese: ツヅリガ(綴蛾) - ツヅリガ(英語表記)stored nut moth
Stored nut moth
An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Pyralidae. Wings span 1-2cm. Males are small, with a yellow-red band running from the base to the center of the forewing along the middle compartment, and a tiny black spot at the edge of the middle compartment, while females lack the yellow-red part and have a large black mark. They are found throughout Japan, as well as from Asia to Europe, but are more common in warm regions. The larvae are well known as pests of rice and other stored grains. They occur in the kitchens of ordinary homes, but are often found in the storage sheds of farms. One female lays about 150 eggs. The larvae spit silk and initially gather together to eat the mother's corpse or the germ of rice grains, and as they grow, they string many grains together to make a nest, eating the outer layer from the embryo, and eventually eating the whole grain.
