The cathedral of Florence, Italy. Its huge dome is considered a symbol of the city and its Renaissance culture. The name of the cathedral (named in 1412) means "Madonna of the Flowers" and is derived from the medieval city name Fiorenza (town of flowers). Construction began in 1296, based on plans by Arnolfo di Cambio, after the old Cathedral of Santa Reparata was demolished. It is a three-aisled church with a Latin cross plan, but its centralized structure, with the sanctuary and transepts of the same shape, surrounded by square vestry around a large octagonal crossing, is an unprecedented innovation for a Gothic church.
